traditional vs self publishing

writingtiips

traditional publishing is the most common form of publishing, and is often what most writers aim for. you submit your manuscript to an established publishing house, and a team of professionals will take care of most things for you! only - it often isn't that simple.

publishing in this way is complicated and timely - and likely accompanied by many rejections. while you can submit a written manuscript and a query letter yourself, many publishers will only accept communications from a literary agent - another hurdle which you'll need to pass!

however, traditional publishing is a more formal approach, and once your manuscript has been accepted the rest of the process is streamlined!

self publishing has only become a big thing recently, with many authors opting to use websites like amazon to sell their book without the hassle of going through traditional agencies.

when you self publish, you're in complete control of your work. you get to create/choose your own cover, find editors, marketers, and complete the publishing process yourself. this is often considered a pro - as you get more of a say in the creative process.

while it's quicker, you often have to pay individual fees and commissions for individual services - unless you're skilled at doing everything! self publishing is more self-led, and it can be confusing without someone to guide you.
