when i borrowed this book, i was expecting it to be a light hearted fiction book - and it was. however, i didn't expect to end up ugly crying at the end! joanna glen has such a way with her words and imagery, not to mention the incredible plot, that quite literally left me speechless.
the story follows the life of a young girl named eva (as in forever, not evil). from a young age, she's always felt like something was off. like she didn't fit in with her family - her mum, and dad. why are there no baby pictures of her? why do her parents avoid all questions about her early years? in kindergarten, eva reads a book named 'the rainbow rained us', in which all the different mothers are given a colour, based on their personalities. there's pink mother - who's delicate and feminine, and blue mother - who's free and open, and speaks from her heart, as well as numerous others for all the colours of the rainbow. as the story continues, and eva grows older, she goes on to meet a wide range of mother figures in her life, all of which she compares back to this book. i found this such a wonderful and unique way to show how even with all their differences and uniqueness, every mother is still a mother. decades pass, and her search spans across continents - all along the way, changing her idea of who a mother should be.
overall, this book was amazing. literally, amazing. there were multiple topics discussed in this book, that could occasionally be seen as uncomfortable or not often spoken about. joanna glen didn't let this stop her - she covers these topics in such a beautiful and unique way, described from the perspective of a curious child, covering the emotions we feel in each life stage. the ending was absolutely bittersweet, tying up all loose strings and questions i could possibly have. what a wonderful read!
